Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing on FLDS

2008-07-21 18:20:20

By Donald Richter

On July 24, 2008, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has scheduled before the Senate Judiciary Committee a hearing on ''Crimes Associated with Polygamy: The Need for a Coordinated State and Federal Response.'' He especially plans to target the FLDS Church.

Those invited to testify at this hearing are all ex-FLDS members or those who have relied on them as their primary source of information. The list of potential witnesses includes the following:  Nevada Senator Harry Reid, U.S. Attorney for Utah, Brett Tolman, U.S. Attorney for Nevada Gregory Brower, Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, Carolyn Jessop, Dan Fischer, and Stephen Singular, author of  When Men Become Gods.  (See “Religious Prejudice Strikes Again”)

Here is another instance of assuming that the FLDS people must be guilty of crimes and that with sufficient investigation something is bound to turn up that can be prosecuted.

In persecuting the FLDS people, the state of Texas has engaged in an egregious abuse of authority from start to finish and already has wasted over $20 million dollars of taxpayer money. FBI Director Robert Mueller has stated publicly that he does not feel a federal task force to investigate these people is necessary. The Federal Government ought, instead, to be investigating the state of Texas, CPS, and every official who had a hand in this fiasco.

The impending hearing amounts to nothing less than a federal witch hunt based on rumors and innuendo from the same individuals and organizations responsible for the current mess in Texas—the very people who have a vested interest in vilifying the FLDS to maintain their book sales and foundation donations.
